Steve, you're right mate, well done. Thanks for your patience!!

Took pics to show the sleeve you refer to but it is SO tight I would probably damage it taking it off. It's VERY thin. Have you managed to remove one before and if so how?

Thanks again

Vince
I have never had need to remove one before as they usually just come off.
I would try and soak it in something that's going to soften 40 years of petrol gum!!!
Don't break it as they are nla as a pattern part.
Regards
Steve

Might be a stupid question, and you`ve probably checked, but is the diameter of the new tap insert the same as the broken one ? or is it thinner and letting petrol run around it.
If it ain`t broke.....don`t fix it

Just have to carry on using pliers to turn the lever till inspiration strikes!

New lever, as it is without the sleeve, is thinner than the original broken lever by the thickness of the sleeve. Petrol does probably get down the gap caused by the absence of this sleeve.
Basically this new tap is no good without a sleeve.

the early taps are always a pain when it comes to leaking
This guy sells replacement sleeves but they aren't cheap

Great find, thanks. Looks too thick but the description is spot on.

The replacement seals from americanclassix are the best pattern ones available. They stopped them for a while but it's good to see they are back on the market.

Sorry a bit late to this discussion. I certainly second the replacement seals from americanclassixs, the ones from German supplier were shite. :D

As the old lever is useless, I'm going to try getting the old sleeve off it before buying a new one.
Any tips gratefully accepted.

i would use a small feeler gauge about 4 thou in thickness + gently push it between the seal & the tap body + use some penetrant like wd 40 to spray between the gap

Thanks for that but I've already got one of them but what they don't tell you is that you also need the sleeve for it which is unavailable. Repro one is expensive and I'm not convinced it will be right. The holes don't line up exactly. I'm looking at buying a used tap now!!
