: Helicoils ok,timeserts are very good,had a gpz head done years ago,Kev's idea,very good. Pay a few more dollars for timeserts Wurth it

time-serts... do once and forget about it.
Many racers install time-serts in perfectly good spark plug threads - they last well. Heli-coils in an area where you don't typically remove a bolt is OK, but in any area where you are likely to remove bolts often, never use a heli-coil.

Personally I am impressed with the "stud" conversion.
Studs are far better than bolts for applications such as cam caps for two reasons.....
1) The stud is always kept in the head so thus no chance of damaging or stripping the threads in the soft head material.
2) Better torque loading as the load is being "split" equally between two threads and not one.
Jimmock one and a half lathes!!

I have used an insert from this country called keenserts which sound the same method as the american inserts. These are a superb bit of kit, the only draw back being you need a lot of meat around the damaged hole to drill bigger to accomodate the insert. On the whole it is worth paying the extra to get a good job.

SO there you have it, several options, if i had the problem in front of me again i would still use my studs, at the time 16 time serts or helicoils was cost prohibitive and the studs were bolts i already had and only cost time, i had to do something or get rid of the bike, i have used inserts in various jobs, but now for me on these top ends there is only one way to go.
