electrical problems

#1 PostAuthor: fergus » Sun Jul 26, 2009 3:22 pm

got bike through mot yesterday no probs, everything was working great so i went long run, on way back it was getting a bit dull so i flicked the lights on and the main fuse blew, managed to get home usin fuse from the lights instead.

i thought the problem would be to do with the big hole in the wire next to the fuse so iv replaced the wire and modified it so i can use modern fuses instead but as soon as i fired the bike up and hit the lights it died again, i cant see any other damaged wires so im just wondering what are the most likely causes?

all this was ok this morning cause it was raining but now the b*****d suns out!!

Sounds like righthand switchgear, bare wires shorting out to handlebars.

This might be useful to check individual circuits.

Your headlight circuit should draw no more than 5 amps ! If it does then that is where your problem lies.

By the way 5 amps = 2.4 ohms. If you are lucky you will find a zero resistance reading :D

thank you! checked switchgear at bars an it was fine so looked where it connects to loom and found a loose connection, all fine now.

thanks for putting me on right track, i was a bit lost.

unfortunatly my girlfriend has pulled her bike apart to look at her cam chain so still cant go out to play!
