Hi Hillbilly,
Some of the tanks have numbers stamped. It is a date code of manufacture. What numbers do you have?

That doesn't make sense to me. Normally it's month/year, for example my tank is 12 4 which is December 1974. What is approx date of your bike?

Early tanks as you say are the one's which take the small badge, the seam under went right through to the end of the line Z1B!!

Davy is correct, the seams remained the same through to 1975 Z1B .The Z1 tanks had 122mm between tank emblem screws and the later Z1A and Z1B had 140mm...I think.

That number could be 2024 on close inspection (Note: I think if it was ending with a 1, it would have a bar at the bottom of the downstroke).

On these tank stamping....... Some years ago, I did a bit of research on a batch of about ten Z1 series tanks, on a WorldWide forum that is now redundant [as regards to history].

I listed them all, in respect to known model Z1 series year, badge size and that tank stamped number, [including some A4 tanks]. I must say, I found no logical sequence, other than to say, they must have been a manufacturing batch sequence. Some had no marking at all, some had 3 digit numbers, some had alpha-numeric stamping! It was not a fruitful exercise, as a matter of fact, it was a failure! Readers of that forum also contributed, with no logical conclusion.
