If as in my case the ammeter has been replaced with a voltmeter would this have any effect on the charging system?as I keep having problems and melting fuses ,not blowing them just melting them.

Ted.
It shouldn`t make a difference unless it has a much larger resistance than original.
Can I suggest you get an voltmeter / tester with a 10amp current setting and connect this from the battery to the main lead once you have disconnected it. This will then show you what you are drawing as you turn each circuit on. You could disconnect the voltmeter on your bike to discount this but from what you describe you are drawing a lot of current but not enough to blow the fuse.
My old fuse box was a bit rough and had started to melt the plastic that held the fuses in place. New fuse box and end of problem.
As a guide main beam at 60watts = 5 amp draw. (60watt divided by 12 volts = 5 amps) You can then check each circuit to find which is drawing too high and at least isolate that circuit. Then find higher than required resistance in wiring or unit or whatever?
