In the beginning....One morning off I go to take her zedness for a morning blat...I'm guessing you know whats coming...Key in...Turn..Push starter...whirr..whirr...click.click..fck all...! after investiation starter brushes are dust, fitted new ones and hooked starter to charger and it works, only when I move it round it speeds up a bit...figure its just brushes settling in, fit to bike, try it and its working just enough to start it.
It sounds jammed,on the button it turns over on one press out of ten, the rest of the time its either clicking or just doing a half hearted half turn. Ive checked the ring gear and that seems ok.With the transfer sproket out the starter seems to spin over ok on the button although I need grips to move the end of the starter spline and seems a bit stiff....Is my starter shagged?

Armatures usually run in bronze bushes. The armature then has spacer washers.
Are you sure you have reassembled it all correctly ?
There should be only a slight end float once it is all reassembled.
It should spin pretty freely by hand off the bike.
If your brushes burned out it may suggest that things were too tight and there was too much current going through the motor !

Take the motor off. Connect it directly to a battery having first stood on it and see how it spins.
If it spins OK then there is possibly a fault with the larger cable involved in the starter circuit. You can check the earth cable with a multimeter for continuity or once you have reconnected and spun it up a clip on ammeter will tell you how much current you are drawing.
It does sound like it is assembled wrong !

Pagan been having this problem with my J1 of late.
After exhaustive testing and loading and fiddle faddling about, pointing the finger at stuff and making like it needed replacing etc etc etc.
Came down to a steel screw in the aluminium engine case holding the earth strap from the battery was frosted up and after cleaning and replacing with stainless screw........................ problem gone away...................... hopefully.
Just for information; the person who had put the screw in didnt cut it down as it was too long. They simply spaced the screw with a couple of washers. unfortunately one of them, the one under the head of the screw nearest the earth strap, was made of fibre!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So no electrical continuity.
Where on the engine is your earth strap??
I have a spare starter motor for a J1 if you want to send it away and have one professionally rebuilt. If indeed that is what is required.
If you need to borrow a known working one, mine is available to change over if it helps.
