I thought the Wiseco kit was great too but I found the oil rings pretty fiddly to deal with, particularily trying to find the ends of the spacer to ensure they didn't overlap.
It's probably my deteriorating eyesight but I found the best way was to "pin" the spacer through one of the piston groove oil holes and gently probe at sections of the spacer with a tooth pick. I could then see if it moved close to the ends, and then move it to the correct position accordingly.
Yet to fire the beast up yet and an still a bit concerned about carburation impact of raising the compression. Also our best fuel here seems to be 95 Octane.

Kiwi,
i dont know if you will be all right on 95 or or not but over here you can buy octane boosters developed when they got rid of leaded petrol for classic cars.
I had a lotus elan +2 designed to run on old 5 star petrol. It ran better on unleaded plus a millers octane booster than it did on leaded fuel.
Millers do an octane booster that boosts standard fuel by 2 points without a lead additive and if you are having problems it will probably help a great deal. Try searching on the web for millers octane booster.
Keep us updated with progress as I think I will probably go down the same route at some time in the future.
Regards Steve R

Guys,
after about 8 months off the road fired up the "J" with the wiseco kit fitted.
Very pleased with the outcome. Started on the second crank of the engine and once slightly warm settled into an even idle. Just a gentle rustle from the tappets. Shut it down after a minute or so.
It certainly seems to be running 100% better than before the overhaul when it was problematic to start, burnt oil and rattled.
Waited a most of the day for it to cool down and retorqued the head to 34ft/lbs as suggested by Debben1. What spoiled my mood slightly was the torquing of the small head end 6mm bolts to 8 ft/lbs. I do not have torque wrench which reads that low but made up one using the socket set T bar set at 6in and an old fashoned spring balance pulled to 16lbs. This was fine on the left one but the right hand one felt, well squishy. At that point I left it alone.
My concern is that thread is beginning to strip and wonder if those small outer bolts are really that important in the head sealing process. I dont want to have to pull the head off again if I can avoid it.
Following this I took the J for a 1Km roadtest. Mechanically it seems fine but the lack of brakes put me off going further (see spongy brakes thread)
So not exactly a Moet day but maybe a small chardonnay is warranted.

If you fit longer 6mm bolts make sure the bolt doesn't bottom before it's done up as you will certainly strip the threads out if it does.
My 1000A1 and A4 motor have dowels to hold the head in the right place. Run it round - see if it starts leaking
