I run a cooler with the connections in the top, so the cooler holds oil when engine stopped..... for a bit of extra capacity

As for the gauge.... it always jumps around from cold (when you looked at it) until the oil warms & thins out

She reads about 10 psi when riding first off.... then calms down and shows a max of 6 when cruising at 5000 rpm

The gauge is probably not too accurate to read the expected 2.5 - 3.0 psi when idling

I'm running a blend of 10-40 & 20-50 mineral oil.
I'm not overly worried, as it only does it when giving it the berries
