Z650 wiring loom

#1 PostAuthor: evurr » Wed Aug 20, 2008 7:41 am

Hi there

Have got to the stage with the rebuild of my '79 Z650 where we are about to send the frame for powder coating, and then it's the big push to start putting it all back together again.

Thing is, we need a new wiring loom really. Does anyone know where we can source one and how much it will cost?

Cheers

Hevs

Have you tried Z Power?

Not much of a helpful suggestion but keep your eye on e-bay for someone breaking a Z650....

we're reluctant to use another old one, might as well use the one we have then.

As the rest is getting an overhaul, wanted to start with a decent loom too.

Thanks for the suggestion though :rocks

Depends how bad yours is... If all the plugs are there and there aren't too many broken wires and butchery you should be able to fix it up. You can buy proper non sticky loom tape, and white spirit removes road grime, dirt, and adhesive from old bodged sticky tape like you wouldn't believe. A clean, new tape where needed and nice heat shrinked repairs it mightn't be too bad.

I would suggest looking to the USA for the loom !
Much better condition considering the age from there. :)

Vehicle Wiring Components will sell you all the bits including block connectors to make one:

A lot better than buying a second hand one.

I'd make a new one if I were you. It's actually pretty easy to do. Just strip off all the old loom tape, peg it taut to a board (so you get all the lengths right) and then make a copy like for like. Remove and clean all the original plastic blocks using electrical cleaner and re-use. Refit using wire and connectors from http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/V ... mepage.php

Wrap it up using loom tape (not insulating tape) and you're done. It'd only take a day and modern wire is less bulky than the original so you'll get a neater fit.

J Browse, over in Wrexham (advertises in CMM) has them from italian z650s - much better nick than UK ones. They aren't cheap though - £75. I bought one as mine was horrible and I'd been through all the usual routes already, and short of having one made for me this was my only remaining option, and it is in really good condition. Light clean, and it looks as new.

This new site advertising in our for sale section lists a NOS mid section. Don't know them from adam but maybe worth a look.

I had a look, and I'm not sure what the photo is but it isn't the main wiring harness - still, at the price it might be worth a stab... :D
