Ok, Newtronics allows for the adjustment of the individual pickups. This is to allow for twisted cranks. I would try moving the individual pickup to see if that will bring in the adjustment. If memory serves me, the advance unit is mechanical so as long as it is lubricated and the springs in good condition it should just ....work.
Newtronics boxes have LEDs on them, these light up as the unit is about to fire. This was good enough on the kettle to get things going.
One thing to check is the timing marks themselves are in the right place. you need a dial gauge and the value of drop from tdc.

ok next instalement of the tickover saga, removed both pickups and elongated the slots lobbed back on, and with brand new timing gun hooked up to gpz battery i timed the bike up correctly, its now ticking over loads better but i can only maintain a reasonably steady tickover at 1500 rpm, as soon as you adjust the throttle stop screw even a tiny amount it will start to drop, and at 1000 it just stalls .im waiting for a set of nippon denso plugs to arrive then will have another go, just wondering if the coils could be part of the problem? they are the originals i think, well they certainly look 33 years old!!!
ps just been lookig on z1 enterprises at coils and there are a lot of different ones there, which ones should i get? im hoping it will be the ones that are $36.00 each!!!

Make sure you ask for ones that will run with your electronic ignition.

While we`re at it! Does any one else run 3 ohm coils with a boyer Bransden electronic ignition. I remain a bit sceptical of this combination. Tommy

right nippon denso's arrived today, stuck em in and warmed the bike up managed to get the tickover down to 1200 rpm and it will hold steady at that. i have noticed that if you push the butterfly on the carbs it will drop further im thinking the throttle return spring is a bit tired, spose it would be after all those years under tension! can these be replaced? if so where can i obtain one?
