Succeeded in getting the front sprocket nut off yesterday.
Had to employ some serious physics to do it.
Heated up nut with a blow torch and then inserted into the hollow shaft a tissue soaked in water, the heat differential between the two was enough for mr. big f**k off breaker bar to shift it.
Still got to finish peening (?) the chain rivets and some painting but it should be all in one piece over the weekend.
One thing that struck me was how much more fancy the sprockets were compared to the new plain steel ones so I am wondering if they could be the original ones? Mileage is 18 K - is that likely?
Incidentally - the lock nut for the front sprocket has a rasied area to match the splines on the shaft i.e. is not flat on both sides - anyone know why this is?

18K from a front sprocket - only if the previous owner was getting 120 to the gallon
