Engine fitting tips, is there an easier way?

#1 PostAuthor: AndyZ1R » Tue May 27, 2008 8:43 pm

Hello all,

It will soon be engine back in the frame time again, i`ve done it a few times before and it`s always a real struggle. Are there any top tips to make it easier? Usually it`s a case of 2 people struggling to hold the bloody thing (how feckin heavy!!), and lifting it in with lots of scraped knuckles and scraped frame. I was thinking of somehow using a trolley jack and blocks of wood etc, but if anyone has any advice it would be much appreciated!

Andy

Strategically placed bit of 4"*2" to keep the engine off the ground and away you go with the frame over engine technique. Easy with 2 pairs of hands.

I also use strategically placed foam pipe insulation (plumbing section of B&Q) to cut down on those annoying scrapes and scratches to the frame.

My preference is to fit the engine into a rolling chassis. I always cover her tender little bits with rags. You really want two folk who know what they're doing, but I wouldn't put the head and barrels back on 'til the motor is back in the frame. Much easier that way. IMHO :D

Alternatively got yourself a big hamacost.

Al next time i want an engine put in you could do mine and ill happily
stand there and watch, eat jaffa cakes, and give orders, seriously i find it
easiest with the head off just gives you more room i find as long as the mate helping you dont lift it by the barrels  not forgeting rags etc to protect the frame

Its either hump a half built motor into the frame OR lower the chassis onto a full rebuilt motor
