Paul,
I'll stand to be corrected, but after a lot of research on part numbers and pictures I think the A1/A2/A3/A4, LTD B1-B4 and Z1-R air boxes are interchangeable.
There will be lots of opinions, but unless it's someone who has the different models stripped side by side, I'd go with the logic that the frames and engines were so similar, why would the big K change the airboxes?
The big part number difference was when the mesh filter over the airbox to carb rubbers was changed, but parts lists give both types for some of the models so I can't tell when.

OK - I've become an anorak, don't read on unless you have drunk copious amounts of coffee or have a £10 wrap of whizz to hand...
Main airbox, part number - 11011-1025
Fits Z1000 A1/A2, all good.
Also listed for B1/B2, which has the same part number side panels as the A1/A2, no surprise, still good.
BUT also listed for Z1000D1 (Z1-R), which has MK2 style side panels, confusing.
THEN
Main airbox part number - 11011-1012 (did say 1016 - poor memory, sorry).
Fits Z1000A3/A4, ie the MK2, so I assumed different shape, that's logical.
BUT
Also listed for B3/B4, which has the same part number side panels as the A1/A2, now really confused.
AND
for the Z1000D3 Z1-R, which has exactly the same bodywork as the D1.
I can only surmise that Kawasaki made the side panels for the Z1-R and the MK2 to fit the airbox and not the other way round or those part numbers cannot be correct. There are no other part numbers for MK2 or Z1-R, or 1977-1980 Z1000 airboxes that I can find.
You only need look at that white Z1000 that was for sale the other day to see how bulbous the Z1000 side panels are at the back to go round the airbox at the front, which the MK2/Z1-R don't being nearly flat.
I have a Z1-R airbox and it follows the contours of my Z1000 side panels although I haven't got round to fitting it in the frame yet.
Z900 is different and I have not researched.

I Haven't got an A1/A2 box here at the moment but from memory the indentations/corner chamfers for the frame differ, the recess for the support stay is a different depth and as already said the air filter compartments are a different height also The A4 airbox cap has two sets of locating pegs for the breather pipes as opposed to one for the A1/A2.

Jack ,they are very similar and both will fit a4 and thou,if you put a thou one on a 4 its a bit of a game to fit the snorkel suggesting it slightly less tall, the a4 air box should have two clips for the carb breathers..Paul J
