Gear Box Trouble

I hope someone can help me..
Here is the problem.
Have trouble selecting neutral from stop position.

Removed outer sprocket cover.
Remove sprocket and shield.
Removed inner cover sprocket cover with gasket. Collected oil.

Reconnected gear lever to check movement.
I noticed there is some type of adjustment on the pin that holds the 3 coil (or four coil) spring that holds the selector mechanism.
This pin is eccentric and is locked by a lock nut. I imagine, this adjustment centralises the mechanism, after the gear-lever moves up or down.

I have overhauled many bikes and never had to adjust this pin.
Anyone help, as I think this may be my problem.

Here is a photo of an old bottom case.
My query is the slotted pin with 13mm locknut, in centre of pic. It is the pin that supports the gear lever spring.
It appears it is not eccentric, as first thought.


To help me with the problem of "to not be able to select neutral from stopped position". It appears I'm not on the right track.
I did select a 3 coil spring (Z1) instead of a 4 coil springZ900/Z1000) for the gear change lever.
Could this cause the problem?

Any help would be appreciated.

looking at that photo have you removed the cir clip from the shaft that locates the selector? all the spring does is return the gear change to its rest position.

Agreed, it's perfectly possible to ride a bike without that spring, but you just have to manually move the lever back to the centre position, it's a pain, but it works, I don't think that's your issue.

Usually difficulty selecting neutral is a dragging clutch, if the clutch is OK, you need to dig deeper looking for worn clutch bearing, selectors worn or bent, etc etc.

The pic is of an old engine, I just used to illustrate the suspect.
Just have to have a look at selectors.. means pulling off sump.. Damn!

As above it may be clutch sdjustment ?

does it select neutral without the engine running? if it does your problem is probably the clutch . is the gear change stiff to get neutral or does it go straight from into 2nd ?

The clutch seems to be working well.
the bike rides well and has no trouble running thru gears. It just when you pull up and want to select neutral it has trouble.
Funnily enough, it ran alright on the stand.

I've now drained the sump and have to pull off the pipes to remove sump and have a look at the selectors. It select neutral when on stand. It was never real easy.

Well it ain't perfect but it's acceptable.
I replace the 3 coil (gear-lever) spring with a 4 coil and replace the small spring that keeps the selector arms together, this one had stretched a bit. This allowed the arms to be firmer on drum.

It made the neutral selection much better, but still not perfect.
I'll leave replacing the selectors thru sump til another day.
I would not say I have fixed the problem, however I can live with it for the time being!

look at the clutch basket fingers and clutch hub splines - any wear will cause drag and thus difficulty in selecting gears from standstill ( when on move it will not be as noticeable ) look here https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=motor ... 6Cfi0cM%3A

Thanks Sid,I'll check that ..... when I get around to looking at the job again and that will be before I let go the sump. You may have saved me a lot of time.
