DYNA IGNITION,
HI , I have recenty fitted a dyna ignition to my z1000a2 with brilliant results. I have now done the same to my z650b1 & met with problems. when setting up with a strobe i cannot achieve the auto advance required even with the backplate on maximum anticlockwise on the slots. the bike runs ok but is a bit flaton power. some one has suggested the cam chain could have moved, the tensioner lock bolt was loose . anyone near telford with the knowledge ?

I have the same trouble with Horace when I replaced the Points with a Piranha.
Since my new Dyna-S uses the same Mechanical Advance thing there is still the same issue.
I took a round file to the holes to make them longer then I just set up to have the advance correct and left the idle setting to be where ever it settles after all the engine runs above the 2700 rpm advance point most of the time unless you pootle around in top gear without touch the throttle ??

The ignition timing is nothing to do with the cam chain and cannot be affected by the cam timing being out.
That would be a separate issue.
On the 900/1000 there are two types of advancer (20/40 or 5/40) and these need the correct Dyna rotor (either 3 or 3A) to match otherwise you run out of slot adjustment as you have described.
Sometimes flipping the back plate will solve the issue but getting the correct rotor is really the correct solutuion.
The difference in rotors is the magnets position.
On the 650 it appears that they all use the same rotor so it's possible that you have been provided with the wrong rotor maybe from a 900 kit or you may be running the wrong advancer.
The advancers from all the aircooled inline fours are of similar fitment.

Rob,
When fitting a Dyna S to my 73 Z1 even with the correct 3A rotor I still had to flip the back plate to gain the desired adjustment.
When fitting a Dyna S unit to my 75 Z1 with the correct 3 rotor I still had to slot the holes to gain further adjustment.
Surely the manufacturers are aware of these problems.

Steve
As said, turn the mounting plate over and refit the pickups, had to do this on a couple of bikes, gave me the adjustment required.

Never had a problem when using the correct rotor for the advancer.
Must have fitted 60 or 70 Dyna's over the years with no issues once the correct parts are used.
Always ends up close to the middle of the slots when timed up with the strobe.
Maybe some numpty at the factory has assembled a few with the back plate reversed .
Thanks everyonefor your comments, a local aging racer mechanic has sorted it out by re-assembling the magnet pickups. seems like a few escape the factory put together wrong as suggested. Interestingly, he was so impressed that he may fit a Dyna to his race bike. My 650 now goes well. thanks everyone,
