Long Tail-Light & Mudguard ~ A4

#1 PostAuthor: Garn 1 » Tue Oct 11, 2016 10:35 pm

I've been a bit frustrated with my latest Z900-A4 project.
Firstly, the rear tail-light bracket (#220-40797) is mounted far too low on the mudguard (I was able to just fit more than two fingers under the plastic rear tail) with the lens mounted in place. I now have modified the bracket to give a gap of about 1 finger...
What gap should it be for this long tail version?
Can any one check the number stamped on the long mudguard "Square" tail-light bracket? I have another bracket #220-40803, seems too high.

Secondly, the beautiful (EMGO) aftermarket tail-light lens was not a perfect fitting into the rear tail-light chrome mount.
There was a gap (about 2mm) above the lens where the curvature of the chrome surrounds did not match the slight curvature of the lens.
Its hardly noticeable, but it ain't right! Have I got a 650 tail light lens?

I could stand corrected on this but I believe the rear light lens was the same for a lot of bikes including Z200 z400 z650 & z1000.

One thing I notice that you have gone to the trouble to get the long mudguard with the seperate reflector - so you should not need a light lens with a reflector built in.

I would go for this type of original unit - which come up regularly on Ebay

Hopefully it would be a better fit!

As above.

The lens fitted has the built in reflector which isn't needed as it has the one on the A4 long mudguard. Also remember the lens doesn't haven't the US side reflectors either if a UK bike.

I would also say you've shaved a little to much off the bracket, unless it's the wrong one (Z650?).

Thanks Kev1R and Garry.L.....
I'm thinking the Emgo lens may be for another Kawasaki model, perhaps a Z650. Agree reflectors are unnecessary.
I cannot understand Kawaski making two rear-tail lens with such a slight difference in the curvature if the top section of the lens.
Anyway, I'll get the correct lens as suggested... It was such a beautful red!

Another member (TrodZ from Classic Bikes Forum) has solved my dilemma, regarding height of the bracket.
it appears the bracket number 220-40797 is the rear bracket for the short guard .
I have now modified this bracket to suit.

The lens above is a correct Euro fitment which I think may well have been the same in Australia as was the long guard, the Emgo one you have is a copy of the US lens with the reflectors and probably a duff lens being a poor fit.
The distance between the top of the light and the underside of the the tailpiece is approx. 17mm on my A4

Thanks Steve, that 17mm is as i thought, about a finger width.
