Bellmouths on a Z1000A1

#1 PostAuthor: RussG » Sun Sep 25, 2016 10:35 pm

I would like to fit bellmouths to my KZ1000A1 but would like to know if there's any issue with it? Does anyone have any knowledge on the implications or advice?

pain in the arse to get the carburation rite best to get it set up on a dyno & even then its not 100% depending on the density of the air flow

Have fitted bellmouths to plenty of zeds. (current z900 café has them and runs perfect)
No big issues once you have upped the jetting to compensate but you really need to source or make some air corrector jets (10mm long, 5mm brass grub screws with a 0.6mm drilling originally available from Ledar/Freeman automotive) to fit in the pilot air circuit in the mouth of each carb.
These will eliminate a flat spot coming of idle and richen up the pilot circuit as a whole to compensate for the extra air.
The Ledar kits are scarce now but sometimes come up on ebay and Grumpy1260 was the last seller to have a few sets.
Anyone with a lathe should be able to make some though.

Having just rebuilt an a1 engine which had run on bellmouths for some years I'd never run them on a bike used on the road: Slight scoring of inlet tracts, 'gritty' wear. Water damage to one barrel, probably from careless washing.

Nasty.

There's a good reason why manufacturers fit filters.

I run mine on bellmouths but i use mine primarily for trackdays. If you have a word with Dave at Saisei he does a set of filters that sit on the end of the bellmouths. Not sure what they do to airflow etc as not run the thing yet. I think they are by PMC. Alternative is Ramair do foam "socks" that fit over the bell mouths.

I have rubber bungs that you are supposed to fit when bike is not running that keep wet, dirt and general airbourne nasties at bay when parked up.

Thanks guys, some good advice, I'll have a look at Dave's site and try and decide if it's worth doing.

I think K&Ns these days have little restriction and more the better if you were to fir the bigger size ones.

As said above - Filters are there for a reason and engine damage can be expensive to fix.
