Run it with 10/40 oil. Semi once the rings have bedded in.
Back the timing off two degrees until its run in. Or fit a Dyna 2000 with retard mode.
Put the more powerful starter motor on it.
Do the coil relay mod.
Increase the cross sectional area of the battery positive lead from solenoid to starter.
Check, clean and remake if necessary the earth from the back of the engine to the negative battery terminal.
Fit a battery with more CCA.

Ok where can I get a more powerful starter motor and what is the coil relay mod and have you got the make of the battery with more cant?
Many thanks for your patience!

I think APE do a very expensive high output starter but there is a version fitted to some H****'s that have more poke forget which model though. CB900 or something like it.
Relay mod is very simple and very effective. If the starter is drawing all youre current this may help to keep the coils fed.

Motobatt batteries tend toward higher CCA or at least if thats not true there are some in the range specifically designed to have higher CCA. I use an MBTX9U i think, and whilst half the size of standard it has something like 25% higher output for starting just a lower amp / hour rating.

H**** CB900 starter is supposed to give more grunt but no personal experience.
My 1260 Z900 runs CR35s. Everything Al says is correct. I dont need any choke. I use an external roller starter as no onboard electric. Couple of rotations to prime. Throttle shut and off she goes. Once warm will start with kick starter.

My Lawson has always been awkward starting from cold as Zorded and Martin can testify, although it bump starts very easily. I find that if I let the carb bowls full up properly it generally starts. However on my Endurance racer, with a similar engine 1170 and c.r. carbs, but different cams, it starts every time very easily, although it is running rich at the moment, which may help.
I am in the process of looking at getting a roller starter, so that I can start it properly every time.

I guess it depends on specifically what your cold starting issue is when cold compared to warm? does it still turn over well when cold but just not firing straight away ?
I have z900 bored to 1015 with high compression - CR31 carbs and never any issues starting - it has standard starter but battery is lithium with high CCA.
I don't use the choke even in winter (garaged) as this can make starting from cold really difficult !
I make sure carbs are full and use a little throttle opening to start it then hold it there until warm enough to idle steady without any choke, but that works for my set up - it may not for yours.
If it is struggling turning over in cold then assuming there is no condensation or volt drop etc. in those conditions you may like to try as a cheaper option a battery with the max CCA (or borrow one to test) if that is your issue ?
