Tacho drive

Afternoon all;

Seeing as summer has finally arrived here in the far north I took the Z1R out for a run round, which found me facing (literally) a long-standing wee annoyance - lack of a rev counter. Thanks to a frame bracing tube being placed a smidgen (technical term) out of place (a looong time ago...), there's no way of getting the tacho cable onto the drive from the front of the engine. Now, I can live with the fuel gauge telling me I've a full tank until half a mile before I need reserve; I don't care that the ammeter needle tries to cheer me up by waving madly from inside its little window without ever telling me anything useful; I can make the speedo tell me pretty much anything by adjusting the amount of twist on the right grip. I just feel the rev counter is missing out on the fun. So, I ask the assembled mass of knowledge: is there any other way of making it work? Fancy electrical gizmos? Telepathy? De-bracing the frame?(this is not an option, BTW). Any and all suggestions welcome.

Z power did an electronic rev counter that looks std , Kath has one on her A2and it works ok . Would it be possible to retro fit one into the Z1R ?

The electronic tachometer I got from Z power, went haywire after 200 miles. The replacement electronic tachometer last a bit longer around 500 miles. I ended up grafting a set of Kawasaki 750 Zephyr clocks, with replacement dial faces from Will Barber.

Thanks for the replies. Taffus - the brace is welded tube, just above the exhaust headers - and JUST in the way of the drive; will fire up a pic when I get a chance if it will help. Sid - don't think I could get that bit in; maybe what I need is a piece that THINKS it's a tacho drive then it can imagine how fast the engine is turning!

Grog, I used one of these motogadget speedo/tacho units and is spot on. It is on my zx7r but can easily fit on a zed, very small but bright....about the size of a pack of chewing gum:

I've got an ACEWELL unit... I attached the magnet to the drive sprocket and the speedo unit is a "mini-style" Zed look-a-like.... it could possibly be incorporated into a Zed speedo shell if required

Folks; thanks for the suggestions. I've (hopefully) attached a pic which shows the clearance available (excuse the grime, it's not as bad as it looks - honest). From memory, a standard drive cable will almost but not quite fit - it's the long metal collar that fouls the tube. Anyone think the cable end (the metal 'tube' bit, not the actual threaded end piece) could be persuaded to bend a bit and still function? I haven't got a cable to hand to experiment with.

Heat the tube up in line with the rev counter drive and dent it with a hammer to allow the cable to fit . You could use a G clamp instead of a hammer if you don't want to break other bits !

Get one of the custom cable companies to make up an alternative end piece on the cable.

or cut a scallop into the tube, and re weld it.
