'77 Z1000 non standard chain guard

Hi guys, I've got a '77 Z1000 which I fitted a Dresda box section swing arm on a few years ago. I'm now wanting to get rid of the huge chain guard and replace it with a slimmer aftermarket item. These seem hard to find so I was hoping some folk out there might have made their own chain guards and would be willing to post some pix so I can get an idea of what works and looks good, cheers.

Hi Jacko, I made one for a Dresda out of alloy right angled bar, just made a cardboard template and cut round that. I made 2 brackets out of some flat alloy too and it worked ok. Needed spacing at one end if I remember to clear the chain. Cheap and cheerful but not a factory finish.

the one on my Z1R with the single sided swingarm is right angled stainless

2 brackets welded on - very simple and neat

My z1000a2 has a metmachex swingarm, I made a chain guard from a xjr1300, just cut it down to size......got the idea from Big Green Bus (steve)

Thanks for the response guys. Yeah, I tried the some right angled aluminium and made decent job of the chainguard but just couldn't get the brackets right. Scott, do you have some pix of the converted XJR chain guard, sounds like it might be a better fit, I've already looked at the one on my ZRX1200 but that just wasn't going to work, cheers :-)

Cheers Scott, I recognise the bike, got a few photos of it from the Blackpool rally although not from that angle. Checking other photos from the rally I see a few folk have the shortened chain guard, this solves the problem of cutting a gap for the shock spring I suppose. I'm going to get the hacksaw and file out and have another go at making a new one, thanks for replying.

According to the mot guy, the chain gaurd is to protect the passengers leg, so it does not need to be long, just the area between the shock and front pegs would be sufficient, as mine is.

What about the one fitted to the Z900/1000 ltd models narrow chrome one ?

Hi Steve, apparently the ltd chain guards are like hens teeth. The bummer is I had one years ago but seem to have let it go somewhere along the line, Doh!

Short guard, as Scott suggests methinks :-)
