battery not holding charge
Guys
Drove the elr to mot last week started no bother and ran there no issues 15 miles.
Problem was when i left mot test centre, bike struggled to start and tick over without conking out.
Drove it back home 15 miles ran great but wouldnt tick over well at lights.
Battery when checked next day motobatt quad battery only 12.3.
fully charged it and it wont go past 12.7 on optimate.
Bought a new yuasa battery 13.3 charger. hooked it up on neg terminal but cant connectto the positive terminal. The positive battery lead is sparking like crazy and melting the lead positive block on the battery. Checked fuses and cant find any issues. Took out the main fuse and still doing the same thing.
Scratch head time.
Any one know what the correct readings are for the rec/regulator ?
or any other thing it might be ?
Appreciate any help its doing my head in.
Thanks
Thorgrimm

Sounds like your battery is cooked, you should get 13.2 volts on a healthy one, acoss the battery terminal you should ideally be getting14.6 v dc at about 3 k revs.

Best to check reg rect with a known good battery,if its the old seperate reg rect best to change to combined unit,i have used the cheapo ones off e bay to good effect,or the ones for a superdream etc work well..

z1000j2 1983 battery not holding charge
went out to shed and checked new battery now at 12.5
was 13.3/13.4 when fully charged yesterday.
Bike managed to start but when meter attached to both pos and neg terminals
and revving bike to 3 k its going up very slightly (12.8) but not above 13
Does this mean the rec/regulator is fooked ? thought it shud go up to 14 with
a new battery when running. checked and replaced bad bit of wire to pos terminal.
Appreciate any help
Thanks

My z1300 had a similar problem i.e battery not charging, the battery and reg /rectifier were OK, it was the block connector from the 3 yellow wires that come from the Stator had melted, i also checked the output from the stator and it was no where near 50+v AC, a new stator from wemoto £65 sorted the problem.
Before buying a new battery etc check the Stator output and connections

I looks pretty daunting Paul but as long as you have an idea of the system on the bike and you start to follow it doing the tests it will get you to a reasonable conclusion and at least save you spending Mega bucks
