A4 VM26SS carbs

#1 PostAuthor: sprint » Thu May 07, 2015 7:06 am

On removing the top covers of the VM26SS carbs you have the adjusting screw and locknut but in front you have another bolt/setscrew which is held by a locking tab washer. What is that bolt for and how do you set/adj it?

That bolt fixes the lift arm to the shaft.
Do not touch it unless you are stripping the carbs.

I have completely striped the carbs to get the linkage parts re-plated and to clean the jets etc so I know which bolt you are referring to and it is not that one.

Have now re-built them and going through the stage of manually setting the 0.7mm clearance between the bottom of the throttle valve and the bore

Would send a photo but can't as none of my photos are public.

With reference to the KZ900 manual on page 171 there is a cross sectional picture of the carbs and it is #12, just in front of the adjust screw and locknut, and is listed as Lock Bolt?

It's just that some of the tab washers have not been bent back to lock the nuts and some are slightly loose and I did not want to tighten them without knowing what it may upset?

You have a KZ900 manual?? Where did you get that from?

I could do with one of those, I am having to use a Z1 manual. :??

Found it on e-bay a few months ago. Most of it is is for the Z1 but it has a 30 page supplement covering some of the changes to the later models. I also have a KZ1000 manual which helps with a lot more detail on some of the areas that were still common/similar as the Z1/KZ900 manuals are a bit basic.

Can you help/advise on my question?

No 25 the lock bolt.

Bend no 29 lock tabs back.

Loosen no 25 and locknut no 23 adjust height by adjusting no 24.

Lock off no 23 then no 25 then recheck clearance - tightening can alter clearance - something you have to allow for.

If all good bend lock tabs onto bolt n nut.

Yes item #25 is the bolt I was referring to.

Thanks for the advice on its function and adjustment.

Is adjusting #25 something you have to do every time you need to balance the carbs or only if you run out of adjustment on #24 as there is no mention of making any adjustment to#25 in the manual?

The bolt #25 locks the adjustment mechanism. I slackened this bolt half a turn before adjusting the bolt with the lock nut. Once you have adjusted and tightened the lock nut then nip up the bolt#25 and fold tabs up. Too tight and you might shift the adjustment. Good luck.

Cheers Steve, I take it that this is suitable for a KZ900?

Not sure as I have Z1's. The original poster Sprint said he references this manual so may be useful?

Hi Richard

I had a Z1000 when they first came out and so bought the manual at that time so I already had it when I subsequently bought the A4 Jan this year.

I subsequently found the KZ900 manual on e-bay and so I have both. As indicated most of it is referenced to the Z1 but with a 30 page supplement covering some of the changes to the 'B' and A4 models.

I have found the KZ1000 manual useful as some of the detail is similar to the A4 giving a bit more detail on the forks and front brake calipers etc. But there is also a lot that is not directly the same so I would be reluctant to say go and get it. If it were on a 7/14 day return then you could have the opportunity to have a look through it and decide if it was useful and worth keeping.

Andy

These Vm26's had a few different designs, regarding the slide adjustment,
..Unless you have a diagram this thread is next to useless for "lookers".
I know the configuration Sprint is talking about, it has a spring loaded arrangement with and adjustment screw and a locking screw.
I'll see if I can get a pic of both known slide adjustment.
