I think the answer to your queation depends on what condition your engine is in.
My engine was pretty worn out when I got it.

Being a mechanic I had access to lots of different oils.
1. I used a fully synthetic 5w30 castrol oil for cars
It smoked like a tyre on fire and the clutch slipped badly.

2. I used a 10w40 semi synthetic comma oil for cars
It smoked a bit and the clutch slipped badly.

3. I used a cheap mineral 20w50 comma car oil.
it smoked a little and the clutch slipped at high revs/load

I have reringed it and it is running the comma 20w50 as a break in oil .

I thing that I will use a motorcycle oil in future cos gaskets/rings and clutch plates are all more expensive.

http://www.ducatimeccanica.com/oil.html

these old bikes where designed to run on old school oils from the 70's, ive always said modern oil aint the way
ive got a mate in the usa that has done now over 150,000 miles with a mk11 shaft and only run on 10/40 gtx ,he pulled the motor apart at 120,000 only to replace the rear tensioner wheel as it had started to break up .the rest of the motor was still sweet
dragracing, because it takes more than one ball !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Castrol Actevo 10/40 - modern oil technology - that will benefit your classic air cooled Kawasaki.
