kz1000a2 carb problems

#1 PostAuthor: scott » Thu Jan 10, 2008 12:01 pm

Hi guys...i need some help.

My kz1000a2(us import) has just been rebuilt?.starts first touch of the button on the choke, however it does not want to come off the choke unless the throttle is held open(main system), and then it will not hold on the pilot system if the throttle is relaxed. I have just discovered that there is some crap in pilot jets, so I would imagine the air passages will need blowing out. Maybe this is why it?s struggling on the pilot system? I also have weeping from carbs. I have the float heights at 26mm. Is 26mm correct for the us A2?? I have measured, with the carb turned upside down, from the bottom of the float to the underside of the body(where the gasket sits).I also need to know about the air mixture screw. These carbs are the type with screw underneath and towards the front and not the ones on the top. I read a post dating may 12th 2007 stating that they should be a half turn out for bottom loaded screw and not 2 turns out, such as is for top loaded air screw. Is this correct? If so, I have my mixture screw set far too rich.

Scott, 26mm sounds a bit too much, so cutting fuel off too quick
As you correctly say, the idle/pilot screw set towards the front of the bike, nearer cylinders, is a fuel control, not air, so more open makes it richer.
If thats the case, should run with less choke. If pilots got sh*te in 'em, chance whole carbs need a proper clean out
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

Hi Pigford,
have i made the measurement right in the first place?...with carbs upside down, from top of float to the underside of the body where the gasket sits. If so, how do you know that 26mm is a bit much....what should it be?Should the idle/pilot screw be a half turn out?

Scott your measuring method is correct, but I found 26mm to be too much so I set mine at 25mm and pilot screw 11/4 - 1/2 turns out. If your troubles persist after a bit of tinkering I have a set of cleaned carbs for an A2, you would be welcome to borrow if you wanted.

Scott, I'd have said 20-22mm :?: Trial & error to fine tune, but better to risk running richer, so even 20mm - measured as u described
Screw out between 1 - 1 1/2, although my Zed runs only 1/2 a turn out but they're Mikuni RS36's with K&N's.
I still think u need to be 100% sure the carbs are really clear, no blockages as even if one carbs playing up it really can cause the bike to run like a bag 'o' sh*te
U need to have a word with Percy Veerance to get u thru this
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

Hi guys,
many thanks for the advice.....i'll make sure the they are spotless inside and then try the 20-22mm setting....failing that i'll try 25mmm.....failing that, i would probably like to take your offer Steve, to maybe try your carbs on my bike.....nice to know there is help only 20 miles away....perhaps you would be kind enough to pm me some contact details, Steve. I best get back in the garage this afternoon then.

Cheers guys

Scott
