On route to work this AM when accelerating once the revs hit 4k the engine revs noticibly higher but there is no accerleration or drive after 4k.Under 4k everything seems ok.The rev counter also wont go over 6k although the engine sounds like its reving its bollox off.
Reckon this my clutch slipping badly, the cable has no more adjustment left so i cant adjust it up any more.
Am i right or going down the wrong route.

Dale now I could be well wide of the mark here as I don't have a manual to hand yet, but on the Z650 only the fine adjustment is done on the cable, first you need to adjust the push rod...

Clutch Adjustment

On z650?s the clutch should be adjusted every 3,100 miles or every oil change. This will increase clutch life as well as making shifting easier.

First, in the middle of a clutch cable is an adjuster, loosen the lock nut and screw it both parts of the adjuster together giving the cable the most amount of slack.

Also loosen the locknut by the clutch lever so the adjusting barrel can turn freely and adjust the barrel so there is about 5-6mm between the adjuster and locknut.

Now move down to the cover where the clutch cable ends. Remove the two screws holding in the adjusting cover. Loosen the lock nut and back the screw out two turns or until it moves freely.

Screw it back in until it is hard to turn and then back it off approximately ? turn and then retighten the lock nut being sure not to turn the adjusting screw.

Now go back up to the adjuster in the middle of the cable and unscrew it until all the slack has been taken out of the cable and the clutch lever does not have any free play and then tighten the locknut on it.

Back by the clutch lever adjust the barrel until there is about 3mm of slack between the cable end of the lever and the mount and then retighten the locknut.

I copied this from the Z650 forum for ease rather than typing it all myself. so credit goes to them.

Sounds like clutch slip. Perhaps the friction plates/springs are well worn or as suggested above the clutch needs adjusting. Failing this....Have you used an oil additive like Slik 50? This stuff coats the clutch plates and makes them prone to slip.
