Honing barrels

#1 PostAuthor: sprint » Sat Feb 28, 2015 10:19 am

Going to hone the barrels. Not done this before so would appreciate some advice.

Have a new honing tool so does that need to have the stones immersed in oil for a while to soak up some oil?

When doing the honing do you do it dry or with oil on the liners and if so is engine oil OK if not what oil should be used?

You can buy cutting oil but any light weight oil will do the trick.
5w to 10w fork oil or ATF is ideal and add a splash of paraffin or petrol into the mix to help the stones cut and keep them from clogging.
Just dip the hone in the mix before honing and keep the supply going while doing the job.
Once honed you must degrease the bores in solvent and finish off with a hot soapy water wash to remove any remaining abrasive etc before giving them a wipe round with some clean oil to prevent oxidisation.

Good advice as above,be sure to keep the hone moving, slow speed on the drill, dont let in linger in one spot, you are looking to get roughly 45 degree daimonds, god idea to practice if possible...

Thanks for the advice. Don't have anything to practice on, but I think I should be able to manage OK without screwing it up!

Piece of drainpipe or a pop bottle will do .
Just so you can get a feel for the correct 'wrist action' :D

Good idea. Will see if I can find something of that nature to have a try on first.

Thanks
