Battery charging issues?

#1 PostAuthor: Lee McEvoy » Mon Aug 11, 2014 7:40 pm

Gents, have some concerns with alternator and reg / rectifier as battery died whilst on ride out. Bumped started ok so could get home.
Want to test the charging system but have no figures to go on. Can anyone help with what should the reg / rectifier be putting back to the battery with engine running? And what should be the alternator be putting out on each wire to the reg / rectifier? Thanks

Should be over 13v - ideally 13.5 to 14.5v feeding into battery :|
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

Lee, i'm in Portsmouth if you need to borrow any tools. I have the usual digital multimeters and DC current clamps if you need to borrow them. If you need a hand give me a shout and i could come over.

Multimeter on the battery terminals should see no more than 14.5v when the revs are high.....any higher and the reg/recitfier is non functional.
The current clamp is usefull for determining the exact current developed by each alternater winding.....can prove if a winding is open/short circuit.

My 900A4 BROKE DOWN one day.

It was a dead battery.

Got it home.
Checked out the charging.
It turned out to be a loose multiplug going to the rectifier/regulator unit.

Cleaned it and snapped it together, hey presto and as if by magic it was all good again.
