Are you sure it's not a bit of valve? that would account for both symtoms.
No compression because the valve is split/chipped and plug gap closed because its been whacked by the bit of valve jumping around in the bore.
might be unlikely but it's the only thing I can think of that would account for both things with one cause.

This little piece of steel looks as so it has spoilt your otherwise good job!
I suspect it is something that has fallen down an open spark-plug hole... probably an insulator resistor that has fallen in.
The valves need to be removed in that combustion chamber and checked & re-seated.
Care with valve seals when removing.

Difficult to say from that angle - but how does it compare size wise to the metal end of a spark plug that sticks out of the insulation material in the centre ??
Looks too rounded to be the non insulated tip from a plug.

One thing Steve Smethurst always mentioned when collecting an engine from him was to make sure the oil ways were cleaned through before assembly.

Unidentified object
Hi. This is an old post, but in case you didn't discover what the object was, it is definitely from the cleaning or vibratory service when you had the cases cleaned, I had exactly the same thing. After I assembled the engine, just before putting the cases together, I saw the same thing just lying in the gearbox! And I thought I had thoroughly cleaned everything! Hope this helps.
