if the valve is bent no matter what you do to the valve clearance will not increase the compression

Yes sounds like bent valve, gaps don't useally get bigger with shims they get tighter. Could the tip of slide needle broke off? Or choke butterfly screw come adrift.

It was one of the guys from Mark Bowen Motorcycles in Chatham. He was only working on my explanation but did offer to sort it for me.

they do snap.

if you remember the thread from bigmac103 a few years ago - he snapped 2 or 3 off if i think.

Wayne - might well be worth getting someone who has done this before to help or do this for you given the problems you've had.

I did think of hat for about a second. But I have stripped and rebuilt this bike from scatch and learnt so much and with all the help I have had from you guys won't give up because of a problem.
The bike looks so good and it runs which it never has in my time so all things considered.
I'll get there in the end!

i'd assess the damage and then get advice.

we all had to do it once, i know we're blokes but we can ask for directions occasionally.

stick with it...................

Wayne,
sounds like could be part of the valve seat, I think your mechanic mate hit the nail on the head.(No pun intended)

Get the head off and confirm.

I had SEP replace a valve seat earlier this year - around £140 all in including postage back to Aberdeen.

Ok head off and ouch!!
Cylinders 1,3 & 4 look ok a little black but easily came off with some petrol. Must be from too much fuel issue discussed earlier. Easily fixed I guess.
Cylinder 2 well the valves all look intact but one damaged where the piece of metal got up behind it. The surface of the valve face, the domed part pitted bad! I would hope a good engineering company good drop fill and re grind. Thinking of getting someone to simply sort the head and valves.
Piston bore looks ok, top of piston beyond repair and pitted bad. I can easily change this with a new one.
Any comments would be very much appreciated, anyone got a good piston?
Who is the guy to go to for cylinder head works?
Steve Smethurst did the initial clean up.
Any advice?

I really don't know where the metal came from I keep looking at it thinking it familiar but I can't place it at all. I have checked the head and all the valves look in place.
I was so careful and kept the pots covered. Maybe there was something in the material that I missed.
Certainly paid the price but in a funny way I'm glad as it has made me look at the head again.
I know it starts now so can move forward with confidence.
Might swap the coils round as well as they are on the wrong side.
I will get in touch with buzzard.

Could the bit of metal be the end of an old spark plug?
