I bought the longer bolts and fixed the coils on today and it started a treat. Took if for a quick run around the block and seemed to rev more freely which is great. I then fitted the electronic ignition as I thought I would do ignition and coils as two separate jobs in case there were problems.

Fitted the electronic ignition and timed it up using a light as the missus told me in no uncertain terms to shut up revving the engine as it was a bit late
:(

I was surprised that I had the back plate at its full extent to time to the 'F' mark, indeed I even had to move the 1-4 receiver plate to get it in position. 1-3 was okay. What is other peoples experience of the dyna s, is it in about the middle of the slots or right at one end like mine?

Having to turn the back plate to the end of the slots means you have the wrong rotor for your advancer.
One type is stamped '3' and the other '3A'
The '3A' rotor is for the earlier Z1's 5/40 deg advancer and the '3' for the later 20/40 deg advancer.
You need to get the correct rotor for your advancer.

Looking like Dynatek need to order correct rotor in from the States so that's a poo. Not sure what 5/40 or 20/40 actually means but is it safe to run mine with the wrong one in the mean time as I did manage to static time it to the 1-4 'F' line?

Not ideal but it will be ok for now.
You need to get the full advance timing correct using a strobe.
I always find that the static mark is slightly off and with the wrong rotor the back plates slots need extending slightly to get the correct full advance .

sounds like the 5/40 and 20/40 relate to when ignition starts to advance and finish advance
Life shouldn't be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, cigar in one hand, beer in the other, body used up, totally worn-out and screaming, "WOO HOO, what a ride!"
