Engine number / Frame match

#1 PostAuthor: Jay1969 » Tue May 27, 2014 3:00 pm

My Z900 A4 frame is a UK one, but the engine is a KZ900B1
My question is: To match the engine numbers closest to the frame numbers,
what's the ideal gap in production time between the frame and engine,
how far back or ahead of the frame did Kawasaki mate an engine to it's destined frame month
before complete build and export to UK?
(The frame is early 1976)

Hi Jay,The 900LTD's were assembled in the US .So it could be they were given frame/engine numbers once they were assembled in the US.

Not so, because the Z900 A4 frame I have was definitely made in Japan factory early 1976, as it doesn't have the US 'KZ' prefix on the headstock.

Between 1976 to 2013, the engine has been swapped out to a KZ900B1 LTD engine.

Ideally, I'd like a close matching Japan factory Z900 A4 engine for my early
1976 Japan factory Z900 A4 frame.
My Z900 A4 frame number is 099***

Enjoy your bike for what it is, whatever engine you put in the frame no matter how close or " correct " the numbers are it will never be correct unless you find the actual engine it left the factory with.

Yeah but if I did that, there wouldn't be as many rivets to fail your
uncompromising rivet counting

Jay,

I had similar thoughts a few times on here.

SERIOUSLY IMPORTANT stuff and not much input from others??

But then on the other hand, next week there might be 6 pages of input into something else serious???

Maybe a bit like ebay, I suppose???

On another serious note,

Can you expand on what you actually meant by "blow me"??
I'm sort of all mixed up with it???
Jimmock. :wnkr

I really am happy with it Graham, just would be ideal if the engine was original UK market as well, and while I'm not a dedicated purist,
I'm passionate about the history of all things Zed, so my question stems from interest as much as idealism, not to be confused with purism... hope that makes sense

Jay, years ago I started a data base of Engine /Frame numbers, mostly concentrating on Z1, Z1A & Z1B. I did however add a few Z900-A4.
You may be able to interpolate this list to find what you are after.
Frame # ...... Engine # (Manf Date).
    086291..... 086447
    095495..... 099934
    095516..... 099938
    096865..... 102930 (10/75)
    096924..... 103024 (11/75)
    096953..... 103061
    098298..... 105531
    098337..... xxxxxx (12/75)
    100289..... 108803
    100201..... 109892
    101853..... 112075 (2/76)
    104273..... 116679 (3/76)
    108047..... 123931 (5/76)
    116967..... 137289 (8/76)

Also, there were 29090 Z900-A4 manufactured

Garn (Sydney) Z1, Z1A, Z1B and Z900-A4
