Fuel Tap

#1 PostAuthor: Wayne1960 » Thu May 22, 2014 6:42 am

Having a nightmare getting fuel tap back on to tank! Don't know why must be doing something wrong.
So I guess I should tighten the nut down onto the fuel tap body then put in the rubber washer then wind the body into the tank.
Tried this but the nut seems to push onto the threaded tube on the tank and won't tighten. Maybe cross threaded but I need to find a solution as the tank is just been re painted!!!!!!!
Is this typical? The thread doesn't look too bad.
Just purchased a 1976 UK Z900 A4 for renovation. Wish me luck.

The tread is LH so it goes on in the opposite direction

Yes I worked that out but it almost pages on up to the washer so no thread left! Well that's how it feels I will try again tonight.

once you have fitted the sealing washer adjust the nut so you have about 6mm of thread showing above the washer. screw the tap onto the thread on the fuel tank turning the nut & tap as one

Thanks for your help. i worked out why i was having a problem and the conclusion is thethread on the tank pipe was worn and the nut simply passed by the threads. I have tried the cold weld glue and it appears to be working.

I have a small black cap with a closed end and 3 holes 2 together and the other oposing.

The cap was in the bag with the petrol tap so i know they belong together.
It fits over the tap union nicely but blocks up some of the holes in the cast alluminium body.

Ak i right in my assumptions and how does it fit. whats it for.

Can someone help identify tap positions as they are differant to the on in the book. Don't know why the tap appears to be original.
Top is O
Left is S
Right is R

Wayne, That pet-cock always confuses me also! the short end of the tap lever is the pointer end.
With the tap lever pointing to the "O" means On
With the tap turned anti-clockwise 1/4 turn, it is in the "S" posn...... Stop petrol!
Now turn the tap clockwise 1/2 turn thru "O", to "R" this Reserve.
When looking down from the tank riding position, you should see "R" on the tap lever.
Turning back thru "O" to "S", you should read "S" on the tap lever.

You will forget this.... put a dash of red paint on tip of tap lever and S to ensure you know when its off!

RegardZ.
