Weve just rebuilt the top end of my Z900. [ new chain and tensioners /guides /rollers ] the cam cover won"t sit down propper, seems to be riding on top idler. do i need thinner rubber mounts on idler, ? its about 5mm high.
or have i the wrong cover, ie; off different engine ..

Any cover will fit with that early type top idler which is why they are a popular design for aftermarket replacements.
Sounds like there is something else going on .
Can you actually get the top idler to bolt down or is the chain too tight for that.
The over tight cam chain could be due to it not being on the crank properly i.e to the side of the sprocket or possibly the wrong cam chain has been supplied.
You haven't fitted the tensioner first have you ? as that will have the same effect.
If the chain is so tight that the idler won't go on then then the cover won't seat fully as the cast inner ribs around the idler bulge will sit on the chain.
I have also known the cover to actually sit on the cam cap bolt heads before seating on the gasket, but it is only by half a mill or so.
This is due to some pattern gaskets being much thinner than genuine and some relief work on the inside of the cover with a die grinder or spot facer is needed.

Your right .
we turned engine by hand, and was tight, then came round, and low and behold" a piece of old guide[ the long front one] was jammed in cam chan, 
When we took barrels of last year, this guide was missing, appart from the screw and fixing part, now about to drain and flush,,,
Tensioner fits down now , cover on,,
Gonna drop sump filter etc ,to see if more in there,,
