Spokes and wheels

#1 PostAuthor: Wayne1960 » Fri Jan 17, 2014 6:51 am

Hi can anyone advise. I purchased a set of original wheels for my KZ900 A4.
I have had them stripped and re chromed and they look fantastic. I purchased new spokes and have laced the rear wheel no problem. But the front pattern is not working out as the spokes are falling short of the holes!
This tells me that the spokes are too short or the rim too big. I checked the spoke spec and measured them and they are 180+mm however I just measured the rim outside edge and it's 20 inches!!!! Is that right?
I thought it should be 19 and would answer the problem.
But why 20 inches? Is there a 20inch wheel for the z's and is it ok to use with longer spokes?
Just purchased a 1976 UK Z900 A4 for renovation. Wish me luck.

It is an original Tagasago rim I got off eBay and have had chromed I will check the markings but they were advertised as from and rear rims. Where do you measure from outside if rim?

They are the right size rims, date code on front is wrong for a Z900. Looks as though you've got the wrong spokes :( :(

Just measured a front rim and it's 20" outside to outside. I assume th 19" is the tyre size ie: inside dia of tyre.

Wayne, it appears you have the correct rims. (That's a relief!)
Your problem will lie in the size of front wheel spokes...
The Z1 series has a larger front hub than the later Z900-A4. I believe therein is the difference, albeit only about 10mm.

What a relief and thanks for all the comments. I guessed it had to be the spokes when I got home and measured the rear 18 inch it came up 19 on the outside an inch bigger so it kind of made sense.

New spokes then, definitely the cheaper of the options.

From the parts book, they should be 184mm

16 41027-085 20 SPOKE ASSY, front inner 184,5mm 97°
17 41057-084 20 SPOKE ASSY, front outer 184,0mm 83.3°

Thanks I did see that. Mine are a right 180mm I purchased from US! I guess it's the overal lengh of the metal you measure and that 4mm wil make a differance.
I need to try and find the same as the rear which don't have the brass nuts.
Any ideas.
