Stearing column bearings

How do you get the bearing shells out of the steering column top and bottom!! is there a special tool? the z training video makes it look real simple.
Just purchased a 1976 UK Z900 A4 for renovation. Wish me luck.

Seem to remember just knocking mine out with a bar of some sort, seemed fairly easy too.

get some 25mm round steel bar and wack em out, failing that you can cut em with dremel to make it easier.
I assume you have no intention of putting em back ?

I love my dremmel. Had to cut the bearing shells out of my ZX10 as there was no where to get a bar on to.

me too, stevew just welds a bit of bar to the bearing to tap out works every time

if you've got a welding kit, run a bit of weld around it and they drop out. Or heat the headstock up and get a socket on a long extension bar and gently tap around keeping it as level as possible as it comes out.

I applied heat and knocked them out with a piece of square bar I had knocking about.

If I was to do it again I would invest in the correct tools for removal and installation.

Doesn't anyone rent the tools out or don't the Z1OC have the tools to lend to members?

The trick is in the weight of knocking stick you use :D and I found from trial and error a 4lb lump hammer and the round bar achieved the required result without any removal of paint :lol:

what a nightmare, the special drift tool i ordered turned up yesterday and it looked perfect. Good quality and looked like it would do the job. I tried it this morning and it felt like it would work then slid straight past the bearing lip both top and bottom!!!!!!!! the guy makes it look so easy on the Kawasaki training video.
