Harris 4:1 Carb settings for Z900

#1 PostAuthor: DogsbolloxofZ1B » Sun Sep 30, 2007 1:43 pm

I've got some serious grief with a M8s KZ900, its fitted with a Harris 4:1 and the plugs are choking up very quickly.
Is anyone running one of these with 26mm Z900 carbs? If so could you tell me what settings you have?

Main jet:
Slow Running jet:
Position of 'C' ring on needle (from the top down)

This bike was bought by a guy who had issues with it from day one and never had it running properly. I've managed to get the bike running now but the plugs choke-up very quickly. the compression is now 127-132psi across the board, it had a Dyna fitted that kept cutting the spark to 2/3 so thats been removed & points re-fitted (for now). I'm just about to remove the carbs and check the above.... Bollxx should have recorede that info last time I had them off.

Cheers, Mike.

Check pilot jets are right size, std is OK.
Mains should only be 10% up from std (is it K&Ns or std airbox?)
Needle may have to be raised a notch from std if hesitant on low rev pickup to richen (clip lower).
Pilot jet either 20 or if too rich 17.5
main probably 120 (115 min - 125 max)
needle 3rd notch (middle)
Does bike start from cold with NO choke? Then get lumpier as warms up?
Black exhaust smoke - means rich (not to be confused with blue - oil or white condensation)
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

Pigford,
This bike is running far too rich! STD air box.

I've just checked the carb setting and found:

Main: 115
Slow running: 17.5
Needle on 3rd (middle setting)

Maybe running 115's with the needle on 3rd slot is the root cause Vs STD 112.5's on the 3rd slot, I've lowered back to the 2nd from top and will refit tonight. With the previous setting the bike ran OK at tick-over for a few mins OK and then got choked-up & cut out. Z900 carbs are a swine to fit..
