speedo help

#1 PostAuthor: captaincaveman » Fri Aug 23, 2013 4:27 pm

Just ran the bike to the mot, the speedo isnt working, i think its a fault in the wires going from the 3 way down, are these avaliable? or can i rewire? not sure? it looks like they are abit mashed where they enter the housing

If its the same as the J1 (only) i havnt found a way to undo the diddly do and re-wire it.
I have seen new wires soldered onto the protruding stubs of what remained of the originals.

Its a very complex system that has its faults and in the manual there are many pages to explain what goes wrong with them and how to test each bit in the sequence.

The odometer has an inportant part to play in the fiasco as well so dont dismiss or overlook this as part of the comic tragedy.

There is a thread on here about rebuilding / testing them from Taffus and thats as far as it got.

Run the tests and see what you find. I might be able to shed some light on them but only to confuse you even further perhaps.

If youre not getting the correct number of pulses per revolution of the wheel that si the starting point.

You could pm RobW as i believe his is the electronic speedo with an alternative drive mechanism (wheel mounted magnets).

The speedo head itself as yet defies rebuild due to the complexity or availability of the chip but it may still reveal itself in due course.

The odometer similarly is sealed shut and being very brittle plastic is will be destroyed rather than fixed if taken apart.

If youve got the round black thingy on the left hand side front wheel spindle with a long black rubber grommett and three wires in it then that setup is standard J1.
There is an American version which has different tell tales in it as well.
I think J2 went over to a cable driven arrangement but not certain about that.
Looks identical to mine and TLC's J1

yeah three wires going in on the left, just where it enters the housing you can see the wires are split and twisted up, not sure i can get to it enough to rewire though, mine was in import but not sure where from?
