As stated by two others have you checked the endfloat of the cams, if there is a lot of sideways movement it will knock i have heard a few with it and gs's suffer it too, i see a post on another forum where a member cured it by making inserts to stop the excessive end float

I think it is very hard to check end-float of either cam-shaft, unless it assembled up without valve springs as an initial check. The pressure of the springs, buckets and shims on the cams makes it extremely difficult to get a real feel.

I have noticed (I have said this elsewhere) that there is definite "Clonk" noise when lifting a head from one place to another when camshafts are assembled without the above spring assembly pressure. I have seen on several "strip-downs", small punch-marks on the thrust bearing, which has obviously been an attempt to reduce this end-float.

Also, I have experienced an oil blockage in one side of the cam-shaft (thrust side) where I could not blast air down the head cam-shaft bearing to the stud hole. I had a blockage in the diagonal valley (oil-way) between the bearing and oil source.

Hi, yes at the moment I don't think it's camshaft end-float.
I think it's reduced oil feed to the inlet camshaft.
If I remove the cam cover & tip a cap of oil on each lobe of the inlet cam, then from a cold start there is no knocking noise.
I now need to try & check for any oil feed blockages / restrictions to the camshafts.

It's a low mileage motor at 6200 miles.
There is a noise that appears to be coming from the top end of the motor.
It's most evident at idle when the motor is cold - hard to describe but the noise comes & goes.
It's not a rattle like a camchain & it's not a heavy knock - it's more of an intermitent clanging noise.
The noise lessens when the motor has warmed up but it's still there slightly from time to time.
I had the alternator cover off to check that the rotor was tight & it was.
I will have a look under the camcover tomorrow.
Just wondered if anyone has experienced a similar thing?

At long last think we're sorted.
Did an engine flush - removed the sump (lots of black sludge in the bottom) cleaned the oil strainer.
Now noise is much reduced - hopefully be going for a spin this weekend. :D
