PICKUP COIL OHMS

Have 2 problems slowly creep in on my Z1R 1980 D3 in the last week.

First up, started being a real caint when cold, starts and runs fine till you move off, need 1/2 choke for about a 30 seconds then it's fine, never done this before, runs sweat as (as always in the past).

Secondly when hot (we are in a hot summer over here) will back fire when throttle closed when travelling, never done this before.

In the past 18 months has float level, ignition coils, ignitor box, colour tune, carb balance, cam chain tension, plugs all checked. New carb inlet rubbers 12 months back, no leaks in this area.

Problem only started last week. Changed out the spark plugs, no change.

Which brings me my 2 questions.

The Clymer manual states the pickup coil harness end wires (black/blue and Yellow/red) need resistance readings between 400-500ohms, the Kawa factory manual states 360-540, Is the Kawa one correct? I thinks so.

My readings are- COLD 460ohms When HOT 540ohms for both coils. Do the ohms readings change when HOT?, I would say no?

If my pickup coils are stuffed going by these readings, surpose Dyna-S ign and ign coils are the go? Where do you guys buy yours?

Simply put Heat = resistance ........resistance = heat, bit of a vicous circle really :cry: I would be looking elsewhwere as Hall effect pickups have two states working or not :) unless somebody has any better suggestions

Try your inlet rubbers.sounds like its them .

Agree With Hillbilly
I had the same trouble with my Z1R, found to be the carb to head rubbers were cracked. Installed a new set and good as new.

Absolutely correct, electrical resistance rises as heat rises

Poor cold starting can be an indication of tight shim clearances check these before you go any further!!

That all for your help.

Finally had time for a look, turned out to be some crud in the pilot jet which is rather strange as tank, carbs, tap and filter as always clean as a whistle, learn sumthink every day.

Quick squirt with carb cleaner and blow job with compression = sorted.
