Are you sure there ain't a small bit of spacer rod in the unit :?:

Otherwise just offer the whole casing with hydraulic unit fitted - until you feel some resistance.... to get an idea how much might need cutting off :!:

Also, as you've been "pumping" it for a while (snigger) make sure the piston is fully home (pushed in) before measuring & cutting
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

There was a spacer but I took it out as its only to be used with a different model a 1000 J I think, I also pushed the piston back in a vice before re-fitting it. What do you recommend shortening the push rod or re-drill the hole in the piston?

I once did a hydraulic clutch conversion on a GS750,using (i think?)a slave cylinder off a mini. It was about 15years ago. Cheap. :D My favourite type of conversion. :D

Thanks guy`s for all the advice I appreciate it , just to summarise and challenge the general opinion.....

the instructions say trim 3 - 5 mm off the piston if its putting pressure on the clutch plates... that wont help as the push rod sits in a hole in the piston.

if I drill the hole in the piston (3-5 mm) isn`t this better than shortening the push rod as the push rod is an original part, are they expensive or rare?

if I were to go too deep if I were to drill the piston I could trim and use the supplied optional spacer.... good / bad idea ??

do I have to take millimetre by millimetre off the push rod (or drilling the piston hole) and keep re assembling and trying the action of the clutch...and how do I know if its spot on..if its not would the clutch have issue like slipping etc

why do I know I wont sleep tonight with all this sh*t going through my mind Doh!

Decisions decisions..It`s all patr of life`s rich tapestry eh

When I fitted mine, I just shortened the push rod a bit at a time. I would not even consider trying to adapt the hydraulic unit.

Z power list the push rod £15.00 https://www.z-power.co.uk/merchantmanag ... ts_id=1060

Good luck matey.

Bob

No experience of hydraulic clutches but from what I remember the push rod is just a round piece of rod. If you want to keep the original part then why not just buy a length of the correct diameter bar (B&Q do some short lengths of stock) and cut to length. Not suggesting this as a permanent solution as I don’t know what the material is of the original rod.

You can experiment with the piece of replacement rod until you are happy with the length, when you are happy you can decide on the next step. Either cut down the original piece or get the correct material and make a new one.

Bob do you have a spare clutch plate to hand?
If so you could use it as a temporary distance piece of known thickness.

Just a thought.

I had to cut 4mm off my push rod.

I am using the original Z1000A1 casing.

Hi Bob, I'm just about to fit my Faulk slave cylinder. I didn't get any instructions from Faulk, do you think you could scan the doc and email me it?

Cheers

I only just got round to having another go at sorting the clutch, I took 4.5 mm off in the end and the jobs a good`un. If I had to do one again it would be a piece of cake, I think I was just a bit apprehensive about trimming the clutch push rod. It makes a great difference to the bike its silky smooth and easy on the wrist. Ideally I want a matching square reservoir for the brakes now so it balances asthetically, any advice?

thanks again for the help

Bob

John C I keep my bike at a relatives house I will be going up there tomorrow so will try and scan and email you the instructions if you send me your email

i'd look at ZRX ones - fit and retain the mirrors. quite low profile for fairly discrete.
