z1r and mk2 frame the same ?

#1 PostAuthor: ross » Sun Dec 09, 2012 11:45 am

just stripped my zir down to the frame and discovered it has a bent steering head, so unless i can get it jigged whilst stripped,i am trying to get hold of a frame as all the rear mtgs etc have been ground off as well. but is a mk2 frame the same , or can i get my frame straightened whilst stripped.
any help appreciated, ross

Mk2 and Z1r are very similar with the double skinned down tubes etc but never had those two frames side by side to be 100% sure they are identical.

You only need the engine , swingarm and back wheel fitted to get the frame straightened though.

Ross, i'm just down the road a bit and used a bloke local to me (us) to get mine jigged.
His Name is Dave Sparrey 01252 545697 (frame straightening specialist) and is based in Cove (close to Camberley)
He is a b%^$&$d to get on the phone but worth it i think because he has been building and repairing bike frames for many many years.

Hope this helps.

my problem is the engine is stripped right down and the rear is being monoshocked at the moment, and discovered it was bent as i couldnt align the rear end with the front. so used a plumb line and found stg head bent to one side so its all in a bit of a mess.

If the engine is stripped, just the bare crankcases bolted in will do as it's only needed to keep the mountings true.
As the frames swingarm mounts are equidistant from the center line you might get it done without the arm etc fitted but any slight deviation there will be amplified the farther back you go so ideally the arm and wheel will be needed.

Ross as Rob says above but you would be best to speak to Dave himself and see what he is comfortable with. Mine was part stripped and he did what he needed to do to get it where he wanted it.
He may not play ball but he used to build race frames, race zeds himself, and was a friend of Ray Debbens old man when he raced. Pedigree but hard work like a lot of old timers.

I got him to do all the work on engineering the drag Z1R belonging to FattyZ1R on this forum once i had walked him through it several times.

i rang motoliner up, and sound like they are on the ball., and very helpful so i am stripping the bike down to the s/arm etc over weekend and taking it there on tuesday.
whilst it is there, they are welding the kosman bracing kit on as i am worried if i weld on before they may find it difficult to straighten and if i weld on afterwards, i would have to hope as i apply heat it doesnt spring back to being bent / twisted. then when its back i can finish my welding / grinding of the frame before being sent off to powdercoaters.
