idling issue

#1 PostAuthor: octanejunkie » Tue Dec 04, 2012 7:52 am

I have an idling issue with my 78 z1000a2, in as much as it doesn't!
Engine runs well and pulls cleanly throughout the rev range but just won't idle.
I've fiddled with the idle adjustment wheel on top, but to no avail. Holding the throttle very slightly gives an idle of sorts, but obviously isn't right.
Any suggestions?

Running standard airbox, V+H pro pipe.

no not yet, bike runs well and the engine is quiet, so hadn't thought of this. Is it a likely culprit?

Is the bike running on all four? check by hand or by spraying cold water on each down pipe,if ok there start by start by checking mixtures with gunson colourtune(halfords) then balance carbs, have you checked ignition timing? valve timing? shims/valve clearances...process of elimination..lots of help on here good luck...Paul J

i would check the compression first then check that you have a good spark at the plugs/ could be a bad coil? check the voltage at the coils 12v. is the ignition timing set correctly? carbs make sure all jets especially the pilot jets are clear. are the valve clearances ok this should show up with a compression test if it is low first check the clearance if it is still low piston rings or worn cylinder bore also check the manifold rubbers for air leaks by spraying brake cleaner or wd 40 around the rubbers were they mount the cylinder head

Personally, I'd fit a NOS engine.

Mine wasn't idling with recent new carbs and a rebuild including pistons and rings but nothing on the head. When I had the head off for another issue back in May I got the valves ground at the same time - now it ticks over like a clock. None of them were't actually sealing but it's been a quite a few years since the head was done. I think the compression was reasonable it was putting out just over 100bhp at the back wheel earlier in the year. Anyway, it wasn't ticking over then it is now. It hasn't been on the Dyno since it was done.
