Z1000 J1 Side Stand Problem

#1 PostAuthor: Gary » Mon Nov 26, 2012 2:13 pm

Does anybody have a Z1000 J1 side stand they would like to sell?
I currently have Side stand B in the picture, but I have a problem where the bike leans to far over when the side stand is down. I have checked the mounting on the frame and it looks OK, there is no rust or rot.
There is a spring missing 92081C, I don’t think this will fix the problem though.
I have been trying to get all the parts that come with stand (springs, washers etc.) but, they don’t seem to available.
Does anybody have side stand A – 34024A they would like to sell?
Or, is there anybody that could advise how to resolve the problem?
It seems where the side stand rests against the stop on the mounting plate on the frame, when the stand is down it is missing about 5 mm to bring the bike up to what I would believe is the right angle. - I am going by my Z900 as this didn't lean this far over.
I have checked to see if there is any elongation to the hole or if the bolt is worn but these look OK. The mounting plate on the frame does look like it is bent upwards but there are no cracks and looking at the welding it doesn’t look like it has been re-welded.
Alternatively is there a side stand from another bike that would be the same as the side stand A in the picture that I could hunt for on Ebay.
Thanks - Gary

Hi, can see where you are coming from on this.these stands are a work of art?cant understand why they made em so complex, two things to double check, these bikes are very prone to rot internally right where the bracket is welded causing flex and breakage, have a really good look even though you think it may not be so,i also used shim washers to pack mine out,but was never confident of it as it does prop the bike over more of an angle than the a4 etc.i always used the centre stand on mine,i know a couple of members on here have experience on these Steve (Ginger Bear) and AL (Zorded) give em a Pm or i am sure they will advise,,,Cheers Paul J

Gary,

I did away with all that over complicated gubbins. :star

I drilled & countersank the mounting bracket (frame) just behind and above the pivot bolt & fitted a countersunk 8mm screw through it, approx 50mm long. I then fitted one bolt to lock it to the frame, then used it to fix the rear stand spring to. I added another nyloc nut to stop the spring vibrating/sliding off of the screw.
This arrangement worked excellently. I'm sorry, but I don't have any pic's.

thanks for the comments, i'll put an add in the wanted to see if anyone has an 'A' side stand for sale.

Steve - i'm trying to visualise what you did but i'm not sure I can though, if I take a picture of the frame mount would you be able to draw on it and send it back to me?

compo z1r - interesting your side stand does look like the parts catalog, what a temptress you are though  . now I have something else to search on ebay for  .

perhaps someone else will come with some more ideas.

I have sidestand B fitted on the J1 with all the complex gubbins attached at the top.
My mounting bracket had split from the frame (underside outer) and had rotated upward and inward; hinged on its innermost edge.

I pushed it down and re-welded it (in the wrong place it turned out) but then twisted the frame to get it back where it needed to be!!!
Not had a problem with it since.

With the bike vertical; the top flat face (uppermost) should be horizontal or the angle will be wrong and it just falls over.

Chris; youre not breaking the paella express are you?? Shame on you.

Gary, feel free to give me a call. It will be much easier to chat. I also have several 'type A' sidestands. One of 'em already has your name on it!

No Al. The Spanish J has type A. I bought another complete stand for the long spring which was missing on my project frame.
