Timing Question

#1 PostAuthor: DavidZ1R » Mon Apr 23, 2012 4:21 pm

Trying to set my points with a circuit tester to do static timing, in the book it says to conect the meter to the spring and earth, using audible tone to measure when the points just open at top dead mark, my prob is the meter buzzes all the time, that is when points are open or closed, it only works when I disconnect the lead to the coil, is it suppose to do that or do I have a short, the motor starts and runs mostly ok? its on a 250 twin by the way!

Hi David are you doing this with the battery connected? if so disconnect it and try again, sounds like meter is picking up voltage when you have it on the ohms scale..Cheers Paul J

when the meter is in the buzzer position it relies on the internal battery for its own voltage. so do the test with the ignition of

Once upon a time you could use a transistor radio sitting beside you, and you'd listen for the "crack" when the points open.
