Unfortunately that's not applicable in my case - it's been rebored to the +1 OS bore with new pistons and rings. Wasn't cheap either as I had to get some from the USA as these part numbers are no longer active.
I've subsequently learnt that the later police bikes use the same pistons and the same cylinder blocks (although under a different part number) and the oversize rings are available for both steps - again with a different part number.
But worth knowing if you have a Z1000J or K and need a rebore but keep getting told the pistons and rings are no longer available. Just get some for the KZ1000P - still being made up until 2005 and still current on the parts lists.

That looks pretty grim with the CR's and youre estimate of correct values seems very plausible.
Mine (J1) was re-bored to 1 mm just before i bought it because it had the J type oil consumption. It had had later (J2 or J3) pistons fitted which was supposed to be the way to cure it. It didnt. I was given bad advice seven years ago at this point and bought new rings (£200) and had it honed. It never bedded in and used nearly as much as you have indicated.
A year passed and i got bad comments from people i rode with who would relegate me to the tail and so i bit the bullett and bought a set of 1100 barrels and had them bored to 1170 and got a wiseco piston kit to go in it.
I had no idea if this would fix it or not but it did.
I am going to guess that the white smoke is unburnt oil in a cold engine and the darkness that you mentioned is oil burning in a hot engine.
Like you i could not easily see where it was going and like you i was using semi to run it in. My suggestion would be to replace it with cheapo as you are and razz the ti*s off it. If it doesnt pick up on the comp ratio or stop burning / sucking up oil then a re-think may be inbound.
Keep the oil level in the lower half of the window as well may help. Anything in the top half of the window is fair game on the over-run.

Thanks Zorded. That's been pretty much my take on it too. I tried ringing around today but none of the bikes shops were interested in taking it on.
As I've got no space to strip it down at the moment and have already spent a fortune on it I'm not overly keen to keep putting money into the pit.
The guy at the last bike shop I called reckoned to do pretty much as you described too.
The weird thing is that despite the low compression ratio it is still bloody fast and runs as sweet as a nut. It has pretty awesome acceleration and doesn't falter. Why Kawasaki had to change the winning formula of the original 1015 engine I don't know - even the old simple arrangement of the way the engine sprocket was held on they fiddled with and got totally wrong.
If it weren't for the fact that nobody would buy it and no shop would PX it I'd get shot of it - you end up resenting it for not responding to the money and effort you've put into it.
