Heat dissipation..(Not Kawasaki)

#1 PostAuthor: Andy M » Thu Feb 02, 2012 8:47 pm

What is the general consensus re heat dissipation. I am building a BSA B175 engine for trials, I am using a modified Fantic 200 cyl head which has a larger finned area etc, they can get hot during trials in the warm months and they are centre plug head. On the Fantic they were black, just wondering is it best to paint or get blasted to bare ally. ?? I will be painting the barrel and using a Suzuki TS185 piston. Thanks in advance....

Painting it black can reduce the temperature by up to 50 degrees.

I certainly would not be drilling any holes in the fins

If drilling holes in fins for the purpose of extra cooling , the holes must be of an equivalent or less diameter than the thickness of the material.
This way you end up with an equal or slightly greater than original cross sectional surface area for heat to air transfer.

I'd go for the black paint, don't bother with the holes and if it does get too warm adjourn to the pub and wait for it to cool down a bit.
