whats a good adhesive for repairing plastic panels?

#1 PostAuthor: malmojoe » Wed Jan 18, 2012 6:33 pm

I'm not sure whether to repair my Z1 panels and tail piece or to just buy new ones. I might try some glue first as it'll be quicker than waiting for repros to arrive.
Anyone know a good glue. They were fixed with aroldite, but it's too messy. Super glue is only good for sticking fingers. What will stick them and not dissolve during painting??

If I do get new panels, has anyone used these ones from 'kwakyracer on ebay?

cheers for any tips

Q bond is good ( like superglue) - and it comes in a kit with aluminium powder so you can repair alloy and build up a job
search on ebay

Thanks Gray, both products seem very similar, with a pot of adhesive, and a pot of powder for filling.
I'm going to have a crack at it  , but I would have gone for this structural strength acrylic, if you didn't have to pay £45 for the applicator gun.

As most are aware, some plastics mend easily, other have trouble. It's all to do with what type of plastic.

There is a company in Melbourne (Australia) that covers all types of plastics with a kit consisting of about 6 bottles of solution and a couple of powders.
I'll see if i can find the companies name.

I had great success with mending one of those Z900-A4 plastic tool boxes, that form a holder to the RHS side-cover, with one of these kits, using a solution and powder of the kit.

Stu, thanks very much, hang on to it and I'll see how the glue works out.

Thanks Garn, sounds a bit like the same kind of product Steve and Gray were talking about, which also has a powder that you mix with the adhesive, also used for car body repairs. Appreciate any info you can get - BTW looked at my Z1a engine today and it has no border and a larger number pad, around 28000 and also from Sweden. Will check it tomorrow to make sure I'm right.

I repaired my daughters plastic front panel on her VW polo.
This stuff was very good.

It dries very quickly & very cheap, I had excellent results, and it is fairley easy to sand & paint over.

This covers a range of materials from steel, ally, plastics, wood stone etc

Thanks JB for the offer, I'm a bit far away though.

I thought I would post that I went with the Qbond, just because it was on Ebay and I didn't have to fill out any shopping cart details - just paid with paypal.
The Qbond is amazing and it worked a treat. Just made a vee butt with the dremel, poured the black powder into it and gave it a tap to level it off. Then dropped a few drops of the solution on and in seconds it was done. Very tough hard substance.
Thanks for your help that saved me binning my originals and buying new repros.
