New Studs or Not?

#1 PostAuthor: LTD Project » Thu Jan 26, 2012 1:29 pm

Getting to the point where I will be ready to put the bottom end of the engine back together.

Notice on the Debben site that you can get new stud bolt sets that run from the upper crankcase to where the cylinder head bolts down onto.

Anyway, I understand that the new sets will have great strength and will now have stretched, but what if I leave my bolts well alone?
Is there anyway of checking their condition? Has anyone had any problems with utilising their standard in-situ studs?

Are they worth it for a standard engine rebuild?

I should point out that the existing ones look fine to me but after 32 years are they past their sell by?

Experienced rebuilders / Expert views please, Thanks

Your original ones will do.
Nearly all my engines have the oem ones in with no problems.
Only my bigblock motor has these APE crankcase studs fitted and then it is usually only the oem head studs that stretch and snap in highly tuned motors.

worth inspecting yours tho' - make sure no one's had the barrels off before and tried to remove the studs with Mole grips - look for teeth marks on the stud shaft- then there's a chance of significant weakening
