Timing Question

#1 PostAuthor: Steve S » Thu Jan 19, 2012 4:13 pm

I have just fitted new point, condensors and backing plate assembly to my Z1A (Happy with running points and not Dyna) Have set points gap, then timing statically using Bulb and 'F' mark will then Strobe it up to check the timing is correct. Just wondered how you check the advance with this set up, obviously when the engine speed is increased the weights fly outwards but how can i check its correct. The only marks I have are 'T' 1F4 and 'T' 2F3 take it 'T' is top TDC.
Has anyone timed this set up, :?:

Cheers :D

There are three marks on the advance unit, "T", "F" & a 3rd smaller mark clockwise of the other two.
You set your points, statically, to the "F" mark. Then check with the engine running & a strobe light attached. The "F" should still aligne at idle, (around 2,900 - 3,100 rpm or 2,250 - 2,450 rpm on newer models) & then as the revs increase the furthermost clockwise mark should aligne showing the advancer is working.

Great article Hanskloss, many thanks for posting as i hadn,t seen that one, :D

Interestingly even though I periodically oiled the weight pivot pins to keep them free, when I removed the timing plate the advance mechanism was sticking in the half advanced position probably on the shaft. A good clean up and lube and its returning lovely now :D

Now come on Steve - it's very brave of you to stick with points - but your comment is only made to try and reassure yourself.... :|

Get the Dyna S ordered/fitted and save all the hassle - it'll need doing after your first trip out anyway
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!
