z1100r - Clutch Slip

On my bike when I the engine is really on a good rpm the clutch slips. I assume that the plates are probably worn? Is it worth while fitting heavy duty springs in the clutch or do they not really make any difference ?

#1 What oil you been using
#2 Any idea how old or how many miles clutch has done
#3 Is cable/adjuster all to spec - correct clearance, etc
#4 New plate set should cure it - shouldn't need h/d springs if motor is standard


My Z1000A2 started slipping so I fitted the lock-up - not much more than h/d plates & springs - OK for road use (done +5000 miles) and wouldn't know its there :wink:
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

#1 - Oil is standard mineral oil
#2 - I would think that the clutch is still original. Milage is 38K
#3 - Clutch is adjusted up OK
#4 - Yes standard engine.

If its the original clutch - put your hand in your pocket you tight fooka, and get a new clutch set - friction plates & springs :lol:
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

Glaze bust the plain plates or get them soda blasted.
Make sure you get the black pips out of the indentations which ever routs you go.
If the plates are those with helical segments they only go in one way round.
If they are the ordinary type with tapered segments put them in with the smoother side of the tabs facing inwards.
The plain plates should also go in with the smooth side of the 'punched' tongues facing inwards.
Has the oil that youre using got friction modifiers in it ie is it a car spec one?
Debbens amongst others do the up rated springs and they do work and not that costly either.
Measure the plates and see what the measure up at. Are any of the plain plates blued?
Are any of the palin plates bent?
Does the oil come out with thick black sludge to accompany it? If it does and the friction plates are blackened then they are burnt and may as well replace them.
Is there any play in the main shaft../..gearbox input shaft that the clutch hangs on?
The bearing behind the clutch can wear and setting up the free play in the clutch cold will then not necessarily be the same as when the bearing allows more axial movement on the shaft when hot!
I know what you mean about it being rev specific and with mine its a descrete area around 7 to 7.5 thousand. Before and after no problem.
Up-rated springs together with the other things above cured mine but by that time the friction plates had burnt and had to be replaced also. I bought EBC and they have been fine.

Had same issue with my J2 with 1105 kit on top end. The friction plates looked and measured ok....but I used new HD springs and new set of friction plates. Problem gone for good.......
I have used full synth and semi synth oil at different times and no slip....
